The playground in the Waterworks area is one of the Partnership’s proudest accomplishments and most popular additions to Presque Isle State Park. In 2005, the Partnership replaced the outdated playground with one that was more creative, durable and challenging for the children. The unique playground was an instant success. Its design left room for expansion, and in September 2008 two swing sets were added to the playground.
The 2009 expansion is now complete, and includes a twenty-four foot rope bridge and a three-story climbable tower. The new structure is an exciting play space for children of all ages and a fun resource to increase physical activity and let imaginations run wild. This playground is certified by the ADA to meet the needs of young people with disabilities. This addition was the final phase of the playground’s expansion. The photo gallery below contains images of DCNR maintainence staff assembling the structure and PIP Executive Director Steve McDermott providing the first pilot test. A couple of lucky kids happened to be on hand to also give it a try.
The completed Waterworks Playground was dedicated on May 20, 2009 when a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held. Present were many individuals from the organizations who played a role in the fruition of this project. The Presque Isle Partnership board of directors, as well as representatives from DCNR, the Erie Community Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Erie, and state senator Jane Earll were all a part of the dedication ceremony. A few lucky kids got out of school early to enjoy the event as well. Below are some photos from the ribbon cutting. Notice the difference just three weeks made in the environment of the playground between its construction and dedication.
