Research Tours Print

Research Tours are available showcasing the 8 research labs including a large aquatics lab featuring fish and other native species from Lake Erie.  Tour schedule subject to change.

Regional Science Consortium:
The Regional Science Consortium is a collaborative, non-profit organization that focuses on and coordinates educational and research projects for Lake Erie and the upper Ohio River Basin.
The RSC is an international organization with members ranging from Cleveland, OH to Mansfield, PA, up into Ontario Canada and down through the Pittsburgh area (See website www.RegSciConsort.com for a list of members).  These members include colleges and universities as well as PA Departments and Commissions.  It is basically comprised of a number of organizations with similar missions regarding the environment and education.  Their objective is to have all branches of science working collaboratively in order to share expertise, equipment and ideas while sharing researchers and students as well.  The purpose of the RSC is then to offer their findings to the general public.  The RSC occupies a 6,000 square foot wing of the Tom Ridge Environmental Center. This area is comprised of a number of research laboratories and classrooms including:
  • Culture Lab
  • Instrumentation Lab
  • Chemistry Lab
  • Microscopy Lab
  • Botany Lab
  • Sample Preparation Lab
  • Greenhouse
  • Aquatics Lab
  • Marina Field Station (Located at the Marina on PI State Park)

In the lower level of the TREC the RSC has two “Nature History Collection Rooms”. Some of the activities conducted in these rooms will be the study of preserved insects, plants and animals. Also, the rooms will serve as “lending libraries” for universities and researchers. They will be able to gather information from specimens and compare it to research done on species in other areas. Every October the RSC conducts the annual “Research Symposium” where 120+ researchers get together and brainstorm and discuss new ideas. The ideas are then offered to the general public through lectures and presentations known as the “Visiting Scientist Series”. The lectures are open to the general public, and are held at the TREC on the second Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm. Professionals skilled in various scientific areas lecture about their subject in an interesting and educational way.
