There are six distinct ecological zones on Presque Isle, each with a different plant and animal community. The record of geological succession can be traced through each of these zones. The zones include: Lake Erie, the bay and shoreline; sand plain and new ponds; dunes and ridges; old ponds and marshes; thicket and sub-climax forest; and climax forest.

Presque Isle State Park, known as a birder’s paradise, is a 3,200-acre sandy peninsula that arches lakeward into Lake Erie.

Because of the diversity of ecological zones at Presque Isle State Park, many different species of plants and wildlife inhabit the park from the shoreline to the climax forest. Of all the plants and animals on Presque Isle, birds are the most studied and understood. The peninsula's location along the Atlantic Flyway and the diversity of natural habitats make Presque Isle State Park a haven for bird life. Migrating birds, including several species of special concern, rest, feed, and nest here. Over 320 species of birds have been recorded at the park. Presque Isle like some locations throughout the world attract so many birds or such a variety of interesting birds that they are known as 'HOT SPOTS.'

Seasonal Attractions Print
SPRING: Spring is special at Presque Isle, with migratory birds being one of the featured attractions. At the same time, the beaches come alive with walkers, and the trails get busy with bikers, walkers, and skateboarders. Fishermen take to the waters again and recreational boaters abound.

SUMMER: Summer is the season for swimmers, boaters, and leisure activities as well as the famous Discover Presque Isle on the last full weekend of July.

WINTER: Winter is never really fun for most people, but many manage to enjoy ice skating, trail walks, and iceboating. Birding enthusiasts conduct a winter bird count...but the beaches are empty. There is cross county skiing on the ideal days, but the lake winds keep most people home.

FALL: Like spring, migratory birds are the primary feature while foliage colors are spectacular. Boaters are busy getting ready for winter and the ideal sunny days attract many walkers.

Gull Point: A Fragile Ecosystem Print
The most dynamic area on Presque Isle, the 319-acre area Gull Point, harbors the best examples of succession in the park. This dynamic area, however, is also the most fragile. To preserve the resources of Gull Point, it has been designated as a natural area.

Perry Monument Pavers Print
A new display designed to draw people to Perry Monument and explain the historical events it commemorates was added to the Park recently. Granite pavers with engraved names of donors to the project surround the American flag and "Don't Give Up the Ship" flag. The new display provides historical information panels containing art and photos with a story line explaining the significant role Presque Isle played in the War of 1812.
